Backchannels: Now Seeking Submissions

A brand-new online quarterly dedicated to creating a network of reciprocity between writers and readers, Backchannels is seeking submissions for their Fall issue. A backchannel is a hidden information pathway; in linguistics, it’s also gesture intended to encourage another to continue speaking. Backchannels literary magazine aims to serve both purposes. They hope to create a less-traveled route for authors to share their writing, and they hope to provide readers an opportunity to encourage writers in their craft.

Backchannels is based out of Eastern Iowa’s Creative Corridor and edited by compassionate creatives. They provide personalized feedback on all submissions, and they stay in touch throughout the submission process.

Now through August 15, Backchannels is accepting submissions for their Fall edition. Submitting authors can expect a response within four to eight weeks.

Poets may submit up to five poems, totaling 10 pages or fewer. Authors of prose—fiction, nonfiction, personal essays, memoirs, and works of creative nonfiction—may submit up to 15 double-spaced pages. Authors of multi-genre or innovative work may submit up to 15 double-spaced pages. All submissions should include a brief bio, around 200 words.

Backchannels accepts all forms and styles of poetry, prose, and cross-genre writing. The don’t accept translations, and they accept submissions from agents.

Backchannels accepts submissions via email. They accept simultaneous submissions but ask that authors immediately withdraw work published elsewhere. They don’t accept previously published work; however, they sometime accept self-published writing. Self-published submissions should be labeled as such.
