Garo: Now Seeking Submissions

Garo is an online magazine of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, interviews, and artwork published by the Rocky Mountain Land Library. Named after a Colorado rancher who built a town around a railroad stop, Garo publishes work that helps people feel close to the land, and close to one another. They like writing that reveals something new about the natural world, something secret whispered in the wild. They also like building campfires and fixing old ranches. At Garo, they’re up for anything—from mountaintop love letters to backcountry jokes—as long as it involves the great outdoors.

Garo is published often, and they accept submissions year-round. Submitting authors can read past publications online to get a sense of Garo’s style. They publish all genres except erotica, and they especially like contemporary Western writing.

Poets may submit up to five poems. Fiction writers may submit one short story, 5,000 words or fewer, or one piece of flash fiction, 1,000 words or fewer. Garo also publishes novel excerpts, 5,000 words or fewer, as long as the excerpt is coherent independent of the larger work. Nonfiction writers may submit one essay or work of narrative nonfiction, 5,000 words or fewer.

Garo accepts submission via email, but not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that authors notify the editors if their piece is accepted elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.
