Tor.com Publishing Open to Novellas till May 15th

Until 15 May 2018 (9 a.m. EST), Tor.com Publishing, the publishing arm of the science fiction and fantasy website Tor.com, will be open for unsolicited novella submissions.

Novellas should be between 20,000-40,000 words and can be either in the science fiction or fantasy genres.

They specify: “This open period is intended for authors who have completed works ready or close to ready for submission. We will reopen slush a second time in July 2018 for authors who are actively working on (or beginning) something that would fit our list. … We would rather see a polished novella in July than a rushed one in May.”

They have also clarified on Twitter that both submission periods will be open, genre-wise – all science fiction and fantasy genres will be considered, so long as they fit the word length.

This is a fantastic opportunity; not only is Tor.com part of Macmillan, one of the Big Five publishers, but works in Tor.com and Tor.com Publishing have also won numerous awards, including the Hugo, Nebula and British Fantasy awards.

The editors encourage submissions from writers from underrepresented populations, including those of any race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, class and physical or mental ability.

They provide a helpful link to their existing list, so authors can get a feel for Tor.com Publishing’s aesthetic.

For novellas, they offer an advance against royalties, and also a royalty-only option.

Tor.com also accepts non-fiction submissions on a rolling basis.
